RE: Bad Walmart Campers II
Can't someone post Cracker Barrel pictures for a change? The Walmart camper bashing trolling thread is getting really, really, really, old.
Here you go, my latest Cracker Barrel overnight, with better landscaping than at the most recent campsite:

RE: Going to make a deal tonite on the Class C
When looking for evidence of water leaks, a flashlight is good but your own hands are better. Press firmly on all the overcab areas and below all the windows. Pay close attention to anything squishy or crunchy. Water can travel really far from the entrance point. You can replace or repair a bad fridge for $1000, but body work is $$$$$.
I would also ask for all the chassis maintenance records. Even if you don't read every page, just the care required in hanging onto all the paperwork is a sign that the owner was paying attention. And vice versa.
RE: Long Dually Valves not just extentions!
Indeed, as the fourth owner of my RV, one of the first things I did was to put on new tires, with special long valves for the duallies. I ordered them from these folks and the local tire place installed them with the new tires. Click on the "Dually valve" link on the left:

RE: Hawaii Tour advise
... I think we will go to the main land b/c I would like to see Pearl Harbor Anybody have any advise for a tour company? I am a single parent and my daughter is a pre teen I thought tour company would best b/c she could meet other kids Thanks
You absolutely don't need a tour company. There are so many tourists, everything is well-promoted with good directions etc. And if you did go with a tour company, chances are that most of your fellow travelers would be retirees rather than families with kids.
Just a caution about the lingo: Pearl Harbor and Honolulu are on the island of Oahu. The largest island, named Hawaii, is usually referred to as "The Big Island" to avoid confusion. If you start talking about Pearl Harbor and "main land", confusion is inevitable.
My preteens enjoyed beaches, museums, hiking Diamond Head, etc. on Oahu but we just couldn't visit that close to live volcanoes without seeing them, so we also visited the Big Island.
RE: Dog Free Campgrounds/RV Parks
I have to agree, sometimes it's nice to know that I won't have to deal with that small percentage of RVers who don't properly train their dogs and/or children.
RE: City Water, Chlorine
You can also just let the water stand, and the chlorine will dissipate.
I once arrived at a campground and was warned by friends about this same situation: They had made tea and had to throw it out because the chlorine taste was so strong. So I used my onboard water, but as I was leaving I topped-of the tank with the campground water. By the next day, there was no detectable chlorine in the water.
RE: Does TANG clean a stained toilet bowl?
... We no longer live in the colonial days. Yes, back then properties of certain foods (like those containing acids) were useful cleaning tools. But since the stone age, chemists have refined those cleaning properties of those foods and made CLEANING products with the SAME properties only MUCH more effective.....
Sometimes, it's just practical. We mostly have vinegar, baking soda, lemons, bleach, etc. on hand and would rather try those than going out and spending another $5 on another specialized bottle of something or other that's going to take up precious storage space. Whether Tang works or not, and whether the OP has it on hand or not, they can just try it on the bowl and drink up the rest of it. Can't do that with CLR!
RE: In Today's L.A. Times: Writer's trip w/new Airstream
Thanks! That was a thoughtful and entertaining piece, unlike some of the gee-whiz newbie reporter articles we come across. But he does manage to cover some of the basic RV issues, like storage and organization: "After only 12 hours, the inside of our Airstream looks as though somebody threw a stick of dynamite into a Goodwill box." And as the owner of another semi-cult brand, it's always fun to get insights into that mindset.
RE: I'm Thinking About Getting a Class C
... Gas engine would be fine if it gets at least 12 MPG. ..., the Sprinter based diesels look like a good bet, but I'm wondering if there aren't some Ford & GM based smaller class Cs that might be a good choice as well....
The MPG that you'll get in your Ford or GM-based Class C depends much more on the individual driver's characteristics than on the manufacturer. You'll get less than 10 MPG on any of them if you insist on cruising along at 70 MPH, but you'll approach 12 MPG if it's mostly highway miles and you can stick to 55 or 60 MPH.
A high MPG is great, especially if you plan to travel long distances. But don't forget to factor-in all your total costs including purchase price and depreciation. It makes no sense to spend $10K more on the vehicle in order to save $5K on fuel.
And then there are intangible hassle factors like service. I can get parts and service for my Ford-based rig in any burg in the US; not so sure about Mercedes diesel.
To answer your original question: Lazy Daze makes a 31-footer with a "north/south" queen bed and a freshwater capacity of 60 gallons and graywater 35 gallons.
RE: Places to see /eat in Boston
Downtown Boston, especially the older historic part, is very compact. Durgin Park (in Quincy Marketplace, on the Freedom Trail) is one of the few remaining places where you can get old-fashioned Yankee dishes like baked beans and Indian pudding.
For an excruciatingly accurate re-recreation of how the Pilgrims lived (and dressed, and ate, and raised sheep) in the 1630s, head south to Plimoth Plantation.
For history you can also visit the Adams homes in Quincy. It's easily accessible on the subway system's Red Line: the National Park ranger station is across the street from the Quincy Center station and they take you around to the various houses in a trolley, it's about a 2-hour excursion for $5 (kids under 16 free).

RE: Donations of clothes and what not.
... I decided to make ME a save box and put in it special things that someday I can pull out , good through and just remember.. if my memory holds up that long. Pictures are good, but material things have body to them although I know the smell won't last.. ..
If you hadn't thought of this yourself, I was going to suggest it. I was walking in those moccasins myself exactly 13 years ago. I kept two boxes of clothing and such with special memories, and a few years later I narrowed it down to one box that I'll probably keep forever, or pass along to the kids.
RE: Gustav ....and New Orleans ..?
Building taller and/or stronger levees is just a variation of digging yourself into a deeper hole. My vote is for "lake."
RE: Camper fire, what happened here?
From the article:
"Gene Classon of Auburn was refueling his Ford pickup truck when he heard a noise from the back of the camper shell attached to his truck. “I heard a little boom and I opened the back,” Classon said. It was then that flames dancing 12 feet high poured out the back of the truck."
How could this possibly be related to the fact that he was pumping fuel? The fire started inside the camper. Both the fuel and the source of ignition were inside the camper.
Further on, we read: “There was diesel pouring out all over because he left the pump running,” Brahce said. “I was in my car when fire spread from his camper to the ground, so I just got out and ran.”
I don't know about diesel, but I do know that regular gas nozzles are supposed to have a safety that shuts them off in this sort of situation.

Red touch yellow can kill a fellow;
Red touch black, venom lack.
The scarlet king snake has the same colors of bands, but arranged differently.
RE: When did this happen? USPS charge?
Barb, I think that was a mistake by the clerk.
I send books, magazines, cassettes, videos, etc. as "Media Rate." It used to be called "Printed Matter." And it's definitely the cheapest way to go.
And if this is illegal, I prefer nobody from the P.O. chime in and tell me so. :B
Since I'm not from the government, I hope it's OK for me to clarify this situation.
Media Mail is indeed the cheapest way to send many things, including books, videos, etc.
But magazines cannot be sent via Media Mail. Many PO staff will tell you that it's because of the advertising, but actually it's because of their status as periodicals. Even magazines with no advertising (e.g., Horizons or Highlights for kids) can't be sent via Media Mail. The USPS regulations for Media Mail include a specific list of allowable items; if it's not on that list, it can't be shipped via Media Mail.
You can use First Class Mail for items up to 13 ounces. After that, your choices are Parcel Post or Priority Mail.
Just to keep things interesting, in May 2007 the USPS set up different rates for the 3 sub-categories of First Class Mail: letters, flats, and parcels.
RE: Landscaping & out door living space efforts
A little over a year ago our company decided to start working 4 days a week, 10 hours a day, giving me a 3 day weekend EVERY weekend. I had to come up with SOMETHING to do with that "extra" day so I decided to make some flower beds for my wife. Here is what I have come up with so far!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v283/tupelo/PHASEII.jpg height=440 width=600...!
That's a lovely setup, but I can't help noticing that you've raised the soil level nearly to the top of the foundation, which is an invitation for termites, carpenter ants, rodents, and all sorts of other varmints. You might want to take that down a notch or two. Then if you run out of things to do, you can come and build one of those at my house!
RE: UNAVAILABLE WI-FI
Don't understand why some knock those who want to be able to use their computer while camping. No different than having a TV, refrig., stove, lights and your dog.
Now that I have a motorhome with a useable bath, WiFi is more important than a clean bathhouse. ...
Amen! More important than a clean bathhouse, pool, playground, fishing hole, game room, or pretty much any of those other extra features that I never use.
RE: Hard to get on RV.Net during the day
I used to check in twice a day, but just gave up trying in the evening unless I'm feeling really bored, or watching something on TV.
